The Parumala Church, formally known as St. Peter's and St. Paul's Orthodox Church, is one of the most revered Christian pilgrimage centers in Kerala, India. Situated on the banks of the Pampa River in Pathanamthitta district, this historic church belongs to the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church.
The spiritual significance of Parumala is deeply intertwined with Saint Gregorios of Parumala, popularly known as Parumala Thirumeni. He was the first declared Christian saint from India, who lived, died, and was entombed here in 1902. His sacred tomb transforms the church into a sanctuary of solace, attracting hundreds of thousands of pilgrims annually, regardless of caste or creed, who seek blessings and healing.
Architecturally, the church presents a striking blend of tradition and modernity. Designed by the renowned architect Charles Correa, the present circular structure was consecrated in 2002 to mark the centenary of the Saint's demise. The expansive, pillarless interior can accommodate over 2,000 devotees, focusing all attention on the central altar.
The annual Ormaperunnal (feast of commemoration), celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, marks the peak of devotional fervor. Thousands of believers undertake grueling foot pilgrimages (Padayatra) from across the state to pay homage at the tomb, making Parumala a vibrant symbol of Kerala's deep-rooted spiritual heritage.
