The Lotus Temple, officially known as the Baháʼí House of Worship, is one of the most remarkable and recognisable architectural landmarks in New Delhi, India. It stands as a beacon of unity, peace, and purity, welcoming visitors of all faiths.
Architectural Marvel :
The temple is globally renowned for its spectacular, half-opened lotus flower shape, which is a symbol of purity, peace, and divinity in many Indian religions.
Design and Materials:
Designed by Iranian architect Fariborz Sahba, the structure is composed of 27 free-standing marble-clad "petals" arranged in clusters of three, forming nine sides. The entire superstructure is made of pristine white marble sourced from the Penteli Mountain in Greece, the same marble used to build ancient monuments like the Parthenon.

In the Baháʼí Faith, the number nine is significant as it symbolizes completeness and unity. The temple design incorporates this principle with:

Nine doors open onto the central prayer hall.
Nine surrounding pools not only add to its aesthetic appeal but also help naturally cool the building.
The Interior: The central prayer hall is a vast, open space that can accommodate approximately 2,500 people. In keeping with Baháʼí scripture, the hall is kept simple and free of idols, statues, altars, or pulpits, encouraging silent meditation and prayer from the scriptures of any faith.
Sustainability: The temple incorporates natural ventilation and cooling techniques. The pools surrounding the structure help cool the air before it enters the hall, minimising the need for air conditioning. It also utilises solar power to meet a portion of its electricity needs.
